Prayagraj: Bhoomi Sonkar and Anchal Sonkar, two sisters from a slum in the Chungi area of Prayagraj, gave a stellar performance in the K2 200-meter event at the National Kayaking Championship, leaving behind teams from Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, and Goa to win the bronze medal. The father of the two sisters, Raja Babu Sonkar, runs a tea stall to support his family. These daughters, who grew up amidst poverty and social challenges, have made a name for themselves in a sport that requires expensive resources and rigorous training.
Four years ago, a non-profit organization enrolled them in the Boat Club Prayagraj, where their hard work began. After continuous practice and training, the two sisters represented the UP team and participated in several competitions, including Khelo India. This time, they proved their talent by winning a medal.
The organization is covering their diet and training expenses, and they have been sent to Bhopal for better preparation. The two sisters dream of one day winning a medal for the country on a big stage and bringing glory to their slum.
