Operation done using modern minimally invasive techniques, and patient received free treatment

Prayagraj: The Department of Orthopedics at Motilal Nehru Medical College has achieved a new milestone by successfully performing a total hip replacement (THR) surgery on a 22-year-old man under the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme. The operation was performed using the state-of-the-art minimally invasive Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) technique, which will result in less pain and a faster recovery.
According to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Anand Kumar, the patient, Ramesh Nishad, had been suffering from grade IV osteoarthritis caused by post-traumatic avascular necrosis of the left hip for a long time. The serious condition was affecting his mobility and normal life. After examination, the doctors decided on a total hip replacement.
A direct anterior approach technique using an uncemented ceramic-on-poly prosthesis was adopted during the operation. Dr. Anand Kumar said that in this technique, surgery is done through the natural gap of the muscles without cutting them, due to which post-operative pain is reduced, bleeding is minimal and the patient can start normal activities quickly.
He further said that with this technique the risk of dislocation of the hip joint also reduces and the patient recovers quickly and is able to return to normal life. The surgical team included Dr. Anand Kumar, the chief surgeon, and Dr. Ranjit. Dr. Anil Singh and Dr. Khushboo played a key role in the anesthesia team. The doctors also cited the cooperation of the operating theater staff as a key factor in the success.
Dr. Vikram Nigam, Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics, stated that modern and expensive surgical facilities are being made available free of charge to economically disadvantaged patients through the Chief Minister’s Health Scheme.
