Demonstration and signature campaign intensifies in Handia tehsil
Prayagraj: The Congress Party has completely taken to the streets to protest against environmentally damaging projects and corporate loot in the Great Nicobar Islands. In this sequence, on June 11, Congress workers demonstrated strongly in the tehsil courtyard of Handia assembly constituency. The workers took out a huge procession from Handia market to the tehsil complex. Taking forward the nationwide signature campaign of the Congress which had started earlier to save Nicobar, today the general public enthusiastically signed signatures in Handia tehsil also.
This movement and signature campaign was presided over by Congress Gangapar District President Ashfaq Ahmed. Launching a scathing attack on the central and state governments, he said, “The Congress party will continue to fight till its last breath to save Great Nicobar. We will not allow this natural and strategically important island to be handed over to Adani or any other corporate house under any circumstances.” He alleged that in the name of development, tribals’ water, forests and land are being handed over to industrialists, which Congress will never tolerate. Ahmed also took the government to task on local and state level issues. He described the problem of stray animals as the most serious problem of Uttar Pradesh. Ahmed said that due to stray animals, farmers are forced to guard the fields day and night and accidents are happening every day, but the government is not able to take any concrete steps for the safety of the cattle and to solve this problem.
During this time, a large number of Congress leaders, workers and general public present in the Tehsil courtyard registered their support by taking part in this signature campaign.
