By performing four complex heart procedures in single surgery
Prayagraj: Doctors at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi successfully treated 40-year-old Prem Lata from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, who was suffering from severe rheumatic heart disease and several heart-related complications for the past one year. The patient underwent a high-risk open heart surgery lasting approximately five hours, involving four major procedures that simultaneously addressed multiple serious heart problems.
For the past year, Prem Lata had been experiencing shortness of breath on walking or exertion, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, and extreme fatigue. Given her condition required specialized heart treatment, she was referred to BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, for further evaluation and treatment.
Prem Lata suffered from severe rheumatic heart disease, which severely affected several parts of her heart. Her mitral valve had become severely narrowed, restricting blood flow to the heart. Her tricuspid valve also had severe leakage. Furthermore, she had increased blood pressure in the blood vessels of her lungs, a condition known as pulmonary hypertension. She also suffered from atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat.
Dr. Ramji Mehrotra, Chairman and Chief of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, said, “This case was particularly challenging because the patient had multiple interconnected heart conditions due to long-standing rheumatic heart disease. Severe valve disease, pulmonary hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and a remaining ASD all increased the complexity and risk of surgery. Our aim was to address the major heart conditions in a single surgery and provide a comprehensive treatment for the patient’s condition.”
The team of doctors performed four major procedures simultaneously during an open-heart surgery that lasted approximately five hours. The damaged mitral valve was replaced with an On-X mechanical valve, while the leaking tricuspid valve was repaired with an annuloplasty ring. The remaining ASD was also closed. The team also performed a left atrial appendage ligation.
Dr. Mehrotra added, “Performing multiple procedures in a single surgery requires careful planning and precise decision-making at every step. The patient responded well to treatment, fully regaining her mobility, and was discharged from the hospital in stable condition on the seventh postoperative day.” The patient is now fully recovered and is resuming her daily activities at home.
