Prayagraj: The City Congress Committee paid tribute to former Prime Minister and renowned economist Dr. Manmohan Singh on his 93rd birth anniversary. His contributions to nation-building were remembered at a ceremony held at the party office in Jawahar Square on Friday afternoon, chaired by City President Fuzail Hashmi. It was stated that Dr. Singh, a highly educated leader, was a pioneer of economic reforms. During his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Singh rescued the country from the global economic crisis. Through a resolution, President Hashmi sent a letter to the President requesting the Bharat Ratna for Dr. Singh. Born in Gah, Pakistan, in 1932, Dr. Singh’s early life was spent in poverty, walking 18 miles to school. He earned a PhD from Cambridge University and a DPhil from Oxford University, where research on him is conducted. He served as Chairman of the Planning Commission, UGC, and the Reserve Bank of India, and also held important positions such as Finance Minister in the Narasimha Rao government. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh strengthened the country’s democracy through economic reforms. He was the only Prime Minister whose signature was on Indian currency notes. He was proficient in several languages, including Hindi, Gurmukhi, Urdu, and English. Initially, Congress members paid their respects by garlanding his portrait and oil painting. Present were former UP Congress Committee spokesperson Kishore Varshney, coordinator Harikesh Tripathi, Taslimuddin, Manas Shukla, Ziaubaid, Sushmita Yadav, Parvez Siddiqui, Anoop Tripathi, Afroz Ahmed, Arshad Ali, Sartaz Mohammad, Rammanorath Saroj, Haseeb Ahmed, Ishtiyak Ahmed, Sachin Kushwaha, Shahnawaz Qureshi, Rakesh Patel, Naseem Ahmed, Pratima Tripathi, Rizwana Begum, Rajkumar Shukla, Mukhtar Ahmed, Kameshwar Sonkar, Keshav Pasi, Mohammad Javed, Satish Srivastava, Naz Khan, Vishal Sonkar, Ajay Srivastava, Geeta Bhartiya, and others.
