Prayagraj:  The City Congress Committee members paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister and renowned economist Dr. Manmohan Singh on his 94th birth anniversary.

A shradhanjali Sabha was held in the afternoon at party office in Chowk with City Congress President Fuzail Hashmi on chair. The speakers paid rich tributes to Dr. Singh and sent a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, urging that he be conferred the Bharat Ratna for his invaluable contribution and service to the nation.

The speakers said that Dr. Singh, who served as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, played a vital role in several important initiatives, including the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), the Right to Information Act and the  Food Security Act. They said that Dr. Singh’s role in ushering in liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation marked a historic turning point that gave a new direction to the Indian economy.

They further said that Dr. Singh, who received higher education from the University officer and Cambridge and the University of Oxford, had earlier served the country in several important positions, including Union Finance Minister, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Earlier Congress workers garlanded Dr. Singh’s portrait and appreciated his contribution and dedicated service to the nation.
