Prayagraj: On the occasion of Bharatendu’s birth anniversary, Shashwat Rang Mandal presented “Bharatendu Charit” at the Shashwat Sanstha office in Kitganj. The play was written by Ajit Pushkal, music by Risha Mishra, and directed by Ritandhra Mishra.

Anushka Kushwaha played the female role brilliantly, while Pooja Yadav brought Bharatendu’s character to life with her acting chops. Costume design by Pratibha Mishra, publicity by Risha, and stage production by Vandana, Aarti Yadav, are key dramatic and emotionally significant in this play. The woman complains to Bharatendu that he forgets family life, marital bliss, and his responsibilities towards her. She wants Bharatendu to be equally dedicated not only to society and literature but also to his family. She argues that domestic life is as essential a part of life as literature and social service. Bharatendu replies that his life is not dedicated to personal comforts, but to serving society and the nation. He says that literature and drama are not merely art for him, but a means to awaken the public and spread light in the darkness.

According to him, the highest duty is to uplift the nation and society, even at the cost of one’s personal life. This dialogue between the woman and Bharatendu represents the personal (domestic) life versus social/national duty. Ultimately, Bharatendu’s stance establishes that the life of a great man transcends personal constraints and is dedicated to society. The woman’s suffering and Bharatendu’s ideals together elevate the play to the heights of human compassion and sacrifice. The essence of this dialogue is: “The conflict between a person’s personal joys and sorrows and his responsibility to society/nation.” Bharatendu, hearing the call of the era, rises above family ties and chooses social service and national awakening.
