Prayagraj: Amidst the intense heat and heatwave in the Jamunapar region, the attention of the local administration was drawn today towards the severe drinking water crisis in dozens of villages of Shankargarh and Koraon blocks. During Prayagraj MP Ujjwal Raman Singh’s visit to Shankargarh area, the villagers raised the issue of drinking water, on which he discussed with the District Magistrate and on his instructions, representative Vinay Kushwaha met Prayagraj District Magistrate Manish Verma on Monday and apprised him of the severe drinking water problem. During this, he demanded to ensure immediate water supply through tankers in the affected rural areas and to re-bore the defunct hand pumps.

During a conversation with the District Magistrate, the MP’s representative explained that the current record-breaking heat has caused the groundwater level to drop significantly. Government hand pumps have dried up, and the pipeline network is not fully operational in many areas, making the situation extremely worrying.

He particularly highlighted the problems of the following areas:

Villages like Lakhanpur, Biharia, Janwa, Nauriha Uparhar, Juhi, Naribari, Amgodaar, Taktai, and Kalyanpur in Shankargarh block are currently facing severe water shortages. Villagers in remote settlements like Beselwa Colony, in particular, have to travel several kilometers daily to get water. He said the lack of natural water sources (ponds and lakes) in villages like Upraudh and Devghat in the Pal area of Koraon block has exacerbated the crisis.

Considering the sensitivity of the matter, the District Magistrate immediately asked the Chief Development Officer (CDO) to issue a letter and assured that the Jal Nigam and related officials would be immediately deployed in the affected villages. Water tankers would be sent to areas without other water sources on an emergency basis, and repairs to the affected hand pumps would be undertaken on a war footing.

MP representative Vinay Kushwaha said that quenching the thirst of the people is our first priority. MP Ujjwal Raman Singh is extremely concerned about every problem facing the people of the area. It will not be tolerated that our rural brothers and sisters, the elderly, and livestock struggle for water in this scorching heat. We have requested the District Magistrate to provide relief to every affected hamlet.
