Prayagraj: The Department of Entomology, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS), Prayagraj organized a two-day national workshop sponsored by UPCAR, Lucknow. The theme of the workshop was “Empowering Rural Youth through Scientific Agriculture Awareness Training Program and Farmer Capacity Building.” The event was held in the university auditorium of JIBB.

The inaugural session began with a word of prayer by University Chaplain, Rev. Lalchung Gangte, followed by the lighting of the lamp. Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Biswarup Mehra, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration), SHUATS, and other dignitaries were welcomed by bouquet, shawl and momento. The program was anchored by Miss Ekta Masih.

The Registrar of SHUATS Prof C John Wesley gave an introduction of the university, highlighted its 116 years of successful journey, and discussed the vision of the founder Dr. Sam Higginbottom — “to serve the land and feed the hungry.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mehra emphasized the importance of beekeeping in agriculture. He noted that apiculture faces many challenges and requires trained professionals. He stated that India produces approx. 1.4 lakh metric tonnes of honey annually, with Uttar Pradesh contributing about 17% of the total production, making it the leading state. He also appreciated the work of Dr. Usha Yadav for her advancements in bee box technology. Dr. Deepak Bose briefed about the topics of the technical sessions to be held during the workshop. Director Extension, Prof. Dr. Praveen Charan, spoke on beekeeping and marketing, and shared tips with farmers for improving honey quality.

On the first day, four technical sessions were conducted: 1. First Session: Dr. Sunita Yadav, Senior Scientist & Head, Department of Entomology, CCSHAU, Hisar, spoke on “Beekeeping as an Entrepreneurship.”

2. Second Session: Dr. Manoj Kumar Jaat, Assistant Scientist, Department of Entomology, CCSHAU, Hisar, discussed “Optimizing Honey Bee Colony Performance through Seasonal Management.” 3. Third Session: Dr. Sunita Yadav, Senior Scientist, Department of Entomology, presented on “Management of Honey Bees and their Enemies.” 4. Fourth Session: Dr. Usha Yadav and Dr. Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Senior Technical Officer, Department of Entomology, delivered their presentations. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Usha Yadav. On the occasion All Directors, deans, HOD, scientists, teachers and big numbers of students were present.
