Eye donation brings new light and hope in life of blind person: DM
Prayagraj: An eye donation awareness program was organized at the Regional Eye Institute, MD Eye Hospital, as part of the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight, from August 25 to September 8, 2026. District Magistrate Mr. Manish Kumar Verma was the chief guest at the program.
Describing eye donation as a great service to humanity, the District Magistrate appealed to people to pledge to donate their eyes after death and to raise awareness about it in society. On this occasion, the District Magistrate himself set an inspiring example for society by filling out an eye donation pledge form. The District Magistrate’s wife, Dr. Ankita Raj, also pledged to fill out an eye donation pledge form. She said that a decision to donate eyes can bring light into the life of a blind person.
During the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight (25th August to 8th September 2026), teams of doctors were sent by the Regional Eye Institute to nearby community health centres for creating widespread public awareness. During this awareness campaign, people were informed about the process of eye donation after death, its usefulness in corneal blindness, and the importance of timely notification. The campaign had encouraging results, with a total of 708 eye donation pledge forms completed during awareness programs held at various CHCs, reflecting the growing awareness and public participation in eye donation in the region. The program honored and felicitated the family members of deceased eye donors. Expressing gratitude for their sacrifice and service to humanity, it was stated that such families are a source of inspiration for society. The purpose of honoring these donor families was to inspire more people to donate their eyes and to promote awareness about eye donation in society.
During the program, the winning optometrists and junior residents of a poster presentation competition organized to raise awareness about eye donation were honored with prizes and commendations by Chief Guest Mr. Manish Kumar Verma and other guests. Through their posters, participants conveyed an effective message about the importance of eye donation, corneal blindness, and dispelling myths and misconceptions surrounding eye donation.
The objective of the program was to inspire people towards eye donation and to convey the message in the society that eye donation after death can bring new light and new hope in the life of a blind person. Present at the event were Prof. S.P. Singh, Director Prof. Santosh Kumar, Prof. Jagriti Rana, Eye Bank Incharge Dr. Aarti Singh and CMS Dr. S.S. Sinha along with doctors, optometrists, junior residents and other dignitaries.
