Prayagraj: Residents of Zameer Nagar, Karelabagh, and B-Block in Kareli are facing severe hardship due to the accumulation of silt, household waste, and other debris in the Ghaghra drain passing through the locality. The foul smell emanating from the drain has made life difficult for hundreds of families living nearby, while fears of the spread of infectious diseases are growing among residents.

Local residents allege that some people are dumping household garbage and waste directly into the drain, obstructing the natural flow of water and worsening sanitation conditions. With the monsoon season approaching, the risk of waterlogging and disease outbreaks has become a major concern.

Former Additional Advocate General of Uttar Pradesh Qamrul Hasan described the issue as a serious public health concern rather than merely a sanitation problem. He urged the Municipal Corporation to take immediate steps for the cleaning and restoration of the drain.

According to Sarfaraz Hussain, residents have repeatedly submitted complaints to the local councillor and municipal authorities, but no effective action has been taken so far. Riyaz Siddiqui alleged that even repeated representations to the sanitation inspector have failed to yield any tangible results.

Ehtesham Ahmad stated that the unbearable stench from the drain has made it difficult for people to live comfortably in their homes, while the increasing mosquito menace has heightened fears of diseases such as dengue and malaria. Reshama Khatoon expressed concern over the impact on children, women, and elderly residents, who are the most vulnerable to health hazards arising from the unsanitary conditions. Residents have demanded an immediate desilting and cleaning drive, along with regular monitoring and maintenance of the drain. They warned that if prompt action is not taken, they will be compelled to launch a collective protest before municipal authorities and public representatives.

Reshama Khatoon, and several other residents have jointly appealed to the Municipal Corporation to address the issue on priority and provide permanent relief to the affected population.
