Prayagraj: In the dialogue series ‘Vimarsh’ organized by the North Central Zone Cultural Center, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, senior dancer Beena Singh discussed in detail the history, cultural importance and preservation of ‘Dhediya’. She said that Dhediya is not just a folk dance, but a symbol of patience, faith and dedication of women in Indian folk life. On Saturday, the program was inaugurated by lighting a lamp along with the chief speaker by Deputy Director Dr. Mukesh Upadhyay, Program Incharge Krishna Mohan Dwivedi.

Bina Singh explained that according to popular belief, during the Treta Yuga, when Lord Shri Ram was leaving Ayodhya for exile, his “Dhediya” (sun-cloth) was removed. This event is considered the beginning of this folk tradition. She said that this ritual was performed as a prayer for Lord Shri Ram’s well-being, safe journey, and safe return. Over time, this tradition became an integral part of folk life.

He explained that “Dhediya” means “patient daughter-in-law.” It symbolizes a woman’s patience, sacrifice, and dedication to her family and society, even in adverse circumstances.

Bina Singh said that the most distinctive feature of the Dhediya dance is its performance style. In this dance, women perform with poise while holding a burning lamp in a vessel on their heads. This is not just an artistic display, but also a symbol of patience, self-control, devotion, and devotion.

He explained that in ancient times, this ritual involved placing rice husk and bitter oil in a vessel. This vessel, along with a burning lamp, was carried to the village Chaura (place of worship) to worship the gods and goddesses. This ritual concluded with the wish for family happiness and prosperity, a good harvest, and the welfare of society.

He praised the efforts being made by the North Central Zone Cultural Center to preserve and promote folk arts, saying that such platforms are doing important work in giving a new identity to endangered folk genres. The program was moderated by Akash Agarwal.
