Prayagraj: According to meteorologists at Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences (SHUATS), the highest rainfall so far this monsoon was recorded on August 8, when a total of 110.6 mm of rain fell. According to the forecast of the Indian Meteorological Department, very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and storm is expected on August 9, for which an ‘orange alert’ has been issued. Scientists have advised farmers to ensure proper drainage system to avoid waterlogging in the fields in view of continuous rains and to pay regular attention to the weather forecast. High humidity and cloudy weather may increase the risk of fungal diseases in crops like paddy, maize, pulses and sugarcane. Farmers have been advised to do timely disease management and spray chemicals only during rain-free periods.
Also, fish farmers have been advised to clean and add lime as required to maintain oxygen level and water quality in ponds after rain. Animal keepers have been instructed to keep animal shelters clean, dry and ventilated, and provide clean drinking water. (Prateek Kumar, Technical Officer, SHUATS, Naini, Prayagraj).
