Obscene abuses in FIR are not right for a civilized society

High Court issued circular to Home Secretary and DGP directing them to maintain correct language in FIR

Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has directed the state Home Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) to exercise caution when registering police FIRs, ensuring that they do not contain words or abusive language that tarnish the image of civilized society. The court has ordered both top officials to issue a government order or circular directing all police officers to do so. The court has rejected the bail application of a man accused of assaulting and seriously injuring two people. Justice Harveer Singh issued this order on the bail application of Premshankar Ram. The application was opposed by advocates DK Gupta and Raghvendra Singh. An FIR has been filed against the petitioner at Revati police station in Ballia. A fight broke out between the two parties. Five people from the defendant’s side were seriously injured. The police could not identify which side was at the forefront of the attack. The petitioner has been in jail since February 15, 2026, and has no criminal history. The petitioner is accused of attacking a family with a stick and an axe, seriously injuring several people. One person suffered a broken bone. Regarding the obscene language used in the FIR, the court stated that society in a democratic country is civilized. An FIR is a public document. Its language should be legible to the common man. This should not happen. The court stated that imposing an immediate ban is difficult, a serious task, but police officers registering FIRs should be cautious. The language of the FIR should be civilized.
