Prayagraj: There was a commotion in Kareli on Saturday when the alliance candidate’s father, former MP Revati Raman Singh, arrived outside the polling station. A case was filed against him on allegations of disturbing government work, violating the code of conduct, and influencing elections. Later, he and his driver were detained. After taking the proper procedures, he was freed. The driver and fifty unnamed supporters have also been charged in the case. On the other side, the former MP charged the police with harassment.
The former MP and father of Ujjwal Raman Singh, the alliance candidate for the Prayagraj Lok Sabha constituency, unexpectedly arrived to the Revenue Training Polling Center on 60 Feet Road in Kareli about 4 p.m. on Saturday.
As soon as he came, a mob of fans gathered. He also had a confrontation with ACP Kareli Pushkar Verma, who arrived at the scene after receiving the information. Following this, he was taken to the police station, where a case was filed. When candidate Ujjwal Raman arrived, he was freed after completing the requisite procedures. On the other side, KK Srivastava, who oversees election activities at the SP state office in Lucknow, claimed he spoke with the state’s Chief Electoral Officer about the occurrence.
According to police allegation; the report was filed in response to a complaint made by Inspector Manish Kumar Rai of the Kareli Police Station. It was said that during the voting process, Kunwar Revati Raman Singh arrived in a car with a gunner and halted in front of the Lekhpal Training Centre polling station. “He was allegedly urging people to vote for their candidate. When we arrived at the location, we noticed a large gathering. Revathi Raman was sitting in the Fortuner with the driver, Chandrashekhar, and two gunners. When asked for the car pass, the driver provided the vehicle pass issued by District Election, Prayagraj on 07/05/2024, which stated that permission was granted till 05:00 pm on 23.05.2024. Despite directions, the pass was not even put on the vehicle’s windshield,” a senior cop alleged.
The vehicle had an SP flag on the front right side, and three additional flags were recovered inside. It is said that the supporters began shouting ‘Murdabad’ slogans at the police and spoke indecently about boycotting the polls and not letting any voter to vote. Even after much coaxing, they refused to calm down and began attempting to disrupt government operations by assaulting the police party with their followers.
Meanwhile, Revati Raman Singh said that a complaint was made concerning voter intimidation. He said that voters were not able to vote. “After receiving this complaint, I went to Kareli. The cop misbehaved there. Following this, I was instructed to go to the police station, where I sat. In the event of further harassment, I shall submit a complaint with the police,” said former MP Revati Raman Singh.

However, police official failed to offer a satisfactory response to their queries. Left with no other option, they issued a release and claimed that detention of former MP, father of the India Alliance candidate Reoti Raman Singh was illegal. He faced such coercion at the polling booth by the local administration. When they protested, Reoti Raman was detained at the police station. “This amounts to murder of democracy which the public will reject. Such a conspiracy was hatched in most of the polling stations of minority-dominated areas,” they alleged and warned of massive protest if ruling party tries to win election through intimidation and cheating.
