Discrepancy between BJP Govt’s words and actions on women’s quota: Ujjwal
Prayagraj: MP Ujjwal Raman Singh said that the government does not want women’s reservation at all and is only pretending. If the bill was passed in 2023, why hasn’t it been implemented? MP representative Vinay Kushwaha said that the government is only misleading the public. A landmark bill for women’s reservation was passed in 2023. It is known as the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act (128th Constitutional Amendment Bill).
Passed in Lok Sabha: The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 20 September 2023 with a huge majority (454 in favour and only 2 against). Passed in Rajya Sabha: The very next day i.e. on 21 September 2023, the Rajya Sabha passed it unanimously.
Presidential assent: It was signed by President Draupadi Murmu on 28 September 2023, after which it became the 106th Constitutional Amendment Act. Key features of the Bill: 33% Reservation: One-third (33%) of the seats in the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies and the Delhi Legislative Assembly will be reserved for women. Quota within quota: One-third of the seats reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will also be reserved for women.
