Urgent Need for Scientific Speed Management and a Strong Road Safety Action Plan
Prayagraj: Marking World Bicycle Day, the Road Safety Network (RSN), in association with Consumer VOICE, New Delhi, and Consumer Guild, Lucknow and Join Cycling with me group organised a cyclothon to highlight the urgent need for scientific speed management and a stronger State Road Safety Action Plan in Uttar Pradesh. The event highlighted the importance of creating safer roads for all, particularly vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, and two-wheeler riders.
The cyclothon commenced from CIMAP Road and concluded at Scorpio Club, Lucknow. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from several cycling groups, including Kukrail Runners, Team Cyclopedia Cyclists by RDSI, Paddling Monks, Lucknow Gazelles, Biking with Smile, Redline Racers, and Tumingwheels69. Participants carried placards bearing messages such as “Slow Down – Lives Matter” and “Strong Road Safety Action Plan Saves Lives”, reinforcing the need for safer speeds and a strong Road Safety Action Plan in Uttar Pradesh.
Road crashes remain one of the most pressing public health challenges in India, with speeding continuing to be the single largest contributing factor. Nationally, speeding is responsible for nearly 70 percent of road crash fatalities.
