Prayagraj: The Department of Neurosurgery at Swarup Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital, affiliated with Motilal Nehru Medical College, has achieved a new milestone in the treatment of spinal cord patients. For the first time, the department successfully performed operations for lumbar PIVD (slip disc) and spinal canal stenosis using the Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE) technique.

This cutting-edge technique involves extremely small incisions. The high-quality visualization and improved magnification provided by the endoscope allows for more precise and safe surgery. Patients benefit from this technique, including less pain, less bleeding, a lower risk of infection, and a faster recovery.

The patient’s condition was completely satisfactory after the operation. He was able to walk within 24 hours and was scheduled to be discharged from the hospital within 48 hours. Experts believe this technique will prove extremely beneficial for patients in the field of spine surgery in the future.

This successful surgery was performed under the supervision of Dr. N.N. Gopal and Dr. Pankaj Gupta.

Dr. Pankaj Gupta, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery, said, “Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE) is one of the latest minimally invasive techniques in spine surgery. The operation is performed using an endoscope through small incisions, resulting in minimal muscle damage.” The surgical team included Dr. Yatish Joshi (SR-2), Dr. Abhilash Pal (JR-2), and staff nurse Sushmita.

The anesthesia team comprised Dr. Arvind Yadav, Dr. Kirti Gupta, Dr. Saurabh (JR-3), and Dr. Sonam (JR-2). Congratulating the Department of Neurosurgery on this achievement, Motilal Nehru Medical College Principal Prof. (Dr.) A.K. Verma stated that making modern technologies available in government medical institutions is a priority for the college. This will enable patients in Prayagraj and Purvanchal to benefit from advanced, minimally invasive spinal surgery in their own cities, similar to those in metropolitan areas.
