Prayagraj: With the aim of strengthening scientific and evidence-based investigation of crimes and enhancing the professional competence of police officers in medico-legal matters, the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Motilal Nehru Medical College, Prayagraj is organizing a “Skill Enhancement Workshop for Police Officers in Investigation of Medico-Legal Cases” from 27 to 31 July 2026. Around 200 to 250 police officers and staff will receive training every day in this five-day workshop.
The inaugural session of the workshop was held on Monday in the Medical College’s Prof. Pritam Das Auditorium. The chief guest was Arun Kumar Singh Deswal, Justice of the Allahabad High Court. Special guests included Jogendra Kumar (IPS), Commissioner of Police, Prayagraj, and Dr. Adarsh Kumar, Director of the State Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Lucknow. The program was presided over by Prof. (Dr.) A.K. Verma, Principal of Motilal Nehru Medical College.
Chief Guest, Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deswal, stated that a scientific and impartial medico-legal investigation is the cornerstone of the judicial process. He added that if doctors and police coordinate the collection and analysis of scientific evidence, the likelihood of conviction in court increases and the rights of innocent individuals are effectively protected.
Police Commissioner Jogendra Kumar (IPS) said that with the changing nature of crime, adopting a scientific approach to policing is the need of the hour. He added that such training programs will enhance the investigative capabilities of police officers and significantly improve the quality of investigations.
Dr. Adarsh Kumar, Director of FSL, Lucknow, stated that the scientific collection, preservation, and examination of evidence from the scene of crime is the most important basis for the success of any criminal case. He added that better coordination between forensic science and the police leads to the successful detection of crimes and an increased conviction rate. Presiding over the program, Principal Prof. (Dr.) A.K. Verma stated that effective coordination between the medical and police systems strengthens the justice system. He added that Motilal Nehru Medical College has always been committed to organizing socially beneficial and public-interest training programs. Such workshops will not only enhance the skills of police officers but will also play a vital role in providing speedy and quality justice to the public.
One of the keynote speakers, Professor (Dr.) V.B. Sahay, a senior forensic expert and former head of the department, stated in his lecture that forensic medicine serves as a bridge between justice and medical science. He added that a scientific approach to medico-legal matters, accurate documentation, and regular training for police and doctors are the need of the hour. He also stated that Motilal Nehru Medical College’s forensic department has been one of the country’s leading departments, and that he has a long-standing and close relationship with its development.
Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Prof. (Dr.) Archana Kaul and Dr. Rajesh Kumar Rai informed that in the five-day training programme, police officers will be given practical training on the scientific process of post-mortem, medical analysis of injuries, toxicology, investigation of sexual crimes, collection and preservation of evidence from the crime scene, writing of medico-legal report, expert evidence in court and latest forensic techniques.
The training sessions will be led by lead trainers Dr. Rajesh Kumar Rai, Dr. Dinesh Kumar Singh, FSL Lucknow expert Uday Pratap Singh, and forensic expert Dr. Manish Kumar Mishra. The objective of this workshop is to make the judicial process more transparent, effective, and reliable by training police officers in modern standards of medico-legal investigation.
Senior faculty members of the Medical College: Dr. Vikram Nigam, Dr. Kachnar Verma, Dr. Man Singh, Dr. Abhishek Pratap Singh, Dr. Monica, Dr. Reena, Dr. Garima, teachers from various departments, senior officers of the Police Department, forensic experts and a large number of police officers and employees were present in the inaugural session.
